President and Founder
Capital Learners was founded by Kathy McIntosh, after spending nearly a decade as a classroom educator and private tutor.
While being employed full time as a Montgomery County school educator, Kathy saw the ever-growing need for enrichment and remedial tutoring. Capitalizing on this need, Kathy quickly built a thriving tutoring business and decided to found Capital Learners Educational Services, in 2015. Kathy continues to cultivate an elite network of private tutors while overseeing the hiring and training process of each new tutor.
Kathy’s energetic and nurturing personality is perfectly suited for working extensively with children. She thrives on her daily interactions with students and the ability to make a difference in people’s lives.
Originally from the Philadelphia area, Nico moved to D.C. to attend Georgetown University, where he studied International Politics. He currently works on the Latin America team at Freedom House, speaking Spanish and promoting human rights and democracy across the globe.
Nico has had a life-long interest in education and a deep experience in tutoring. He strongly believes in the importance of educators serving as mentors for their students.
Originally from the Tampa Bay area, John is a graduate of Boston College where he majored in Biology and minored in Classical Studies. He served as class President while attending Georgetown University’s Masters in Biotechnology Program and is currently pursuing a doctorate in Tumor Biology.
John was a nationally ranked Mu Alpha Theta Math scholar and a Writing Center Tutor in high school, and continued tutoring in college. His emphasizes critical thinking skills, organization, and independent thinking abilities. John is passionate about pushing his students to their fullest potential and instilling confidence and pride in their work.
Anna is a native Spanish speaker and has taught Spanish at the high school and college levels. She is currently pursuing her Master of Arts in Teaching degree at the American University. She also holds Master’s degrees in Latin American Studies and Community and Regional Planning from the University of New Mexico.
Lucia is a native Spanish speaker and a marine biologist with a doctorate degree from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and a Master’s of Science from Western Washington University. She has extensively taught Biology, Marine Biology and Environmental Sciences at the college level.
Lucia is passionate about tutoring middle and high school students in Spanish, science courses, organizational and study skills, and reading comprehension, while being congnizant of the different learning styles to help student achieve their learning potential. Her compassion, sincerity and patience help her motivate students to enjoy themselves while they learn.
Tabitha is an educator in the DC Metro Area. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in International Affairs and French Language and Literature. She also has a Master’s degree in Elementary Education from the George Washington University.
MaryEllen is a special educator and reading specialist in the DC Metro Area. She received a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Special Education and an Educational Specialist Degree in Education Leadership and Administration from George Washington University.
MaryEllen implements explicit and systematic instruction and intervention in decoding and encoding using Wilson Reading System, Fundations, and Just Words. She is also trained in Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention. She works with students in reading, math, and writing.
Andrea grew up in Montgomery County and attended MCPS schools. She has a B.A. in English from the University of Maryland. After teaching English in Thailand, she earned her M.S. Ed. in Elementary Education from the University of Pennsylvania. She has taught in the DC Metro Area for 6 years.
Andrea is passionate about reading and writing. She enjoys connecting with her students, and watching them learn and grow.
Sydney grew up in Maryland and attended MCPS schools. She went to East Carolina University and graduated with honors from the education program receiving her bachelor’s degree in elementary education with a concentration in mathematics. She is now an elementary school teacher in MCPS.
Sydney is very passionate about working with students. She has four younger sisters and truly enjoys watching young learners gain confidence academically.
Chinenye is a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park, where she earned her master’s degree in English language and literature in 2008 and a doctorate in the same field in 2013. She currently works as an editor in Washington, DC.
As a tutor, Chinenye works strategically with students to enhance their academic skills. She enjoys watching them gain confidence in their abilities and grow as learners.
Anna is an experienced middle and high school French teacher. She graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in French Language and Secondary Education. She has several years of classroom teaching experience in Montgomery County Public Schools. She is currently working on her Master’s degree through Johns Hopkins University.
As a tutor, Anna’s specialties include secondary level French and history. She also loves to teach study skills and time management techniques. She is passionate about teaching and firmly believes that hard work over time equals success for all learners.
Evans grew up in Chevy Chase, Maryland where he attended St. Albans School. He graduated from Middlebury College with a double major in neuroscience and economics. He then went on to medical school at Eastern Virginia Medical School. He currently is pursuing his Master’s in Biotechnology from Georgetown University.
Since joining the team at Capital Learners, Evans has focused primarily on tutoring in the biosciences. He enjoys helping students develop independence and self-confidence in their academic abilities.
Casey moved to the DC-metropolitan area to attend the University of Mary Washington, where she majored in mathematics and sociology. During her time at Mary Washington, she was a teaching assistant in the Mathematics Department and held weekly study sessions to tutor students and help students develop cooperative learning and study skills. She also has experience helping students develop executive functioning skills.
Casey specializes in mathematics, including Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Statistics, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus, as well as in time management and organizational study skills. She is enthusiastic about helping students uncover their potential and grow as learners.
After growing up in Illinois, Kelly came to the University of Maryland on a golf scholarship. She loved the DC area so much that she decided to stay after graduation to pursue her teaching career. She has been teaching in Montgomery County Public Schools for eight years. Kelly also has her Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction, with a certification in administration.
As a tutor, Kelly works with elementary aged children in all subject areas. She is enthusiastic about teaching. She believes in building confidence in all of her learners to allow them to achieve their highest potential.
Haley is an educator in the DC Metro Area. She graduated from Towson University with a degree in Early Childhood Education in 2013 and has been working as an elementary school teacher in Bethesda, MD ever since.
Haley works with elementary aged students in reading, writing, and math. She implements tailored lessons for all types of learners. She enjoys making connections with her students and helping them succeed.
